20th century enterprise management has not defined the business or business data sets
20th century management organizes and manages the enterprise with a wide variety of organization and management structures laid over the business. These many structures describe the enterprise with different terminology and different definitions. Each structure is processed by information systems producing a large IT overhead and information complexity. New information systems and IT architectures are added to reconcile data and manage information, records, reports, documents, etc and to manage system portfolios, hardware and network complexity, and IT business and user alignment problems. All this extra cost and huge waste is required because 20th century enterprise management has never defined the business or business data entities to be managed as one set for complete, consistent, and accurate business information. No data is collected on the actual business.
The wide proliferation of enterprise data sets and entities cause information complexity
Each overlaid structure uses a different data sets, entities, and records. The organization structure defines department, sections, units, positions, functions, jobs, etc. The corporate plan defines units, product lines, customer segments, markets, etc. Processes and systems define products, customers, invoices, orders, assets, etc as many separate entities and different files. The account structure defines centers, codes, objects, etc. The cost structure defines activities, stations, resources, processes, etc. Many conflicting and complex enterprise management methods are employed like ABC, ABM, BPM, BPR, CRM, ERP, EVM, etc. All this creates enormous amounts of information about the enterprise, but no direct information on the actual business or business performance.
21st century business management describes the business through six basic data sets
21st century business management organizes the actual business as capital invested in by the business that is available as performance solutions, the specific results the business must produce to be successful, and actual business performance in the utilization of a performance solution to produce a result.

All business information is organized under six basic data sets. Each data set has common attributes that are updated and managed as a set. Specific entities within a set with specific attributes and processing needs are handled as subsidiary records:
- Capital Solutions: All capital utilized is defined as captial solutions including organization units, processes, data, direct and contracted employees, capabilities, knowledge, assets, supply, records, strategy, tactics, and intelligence and subsidiary records are defined, accessed, and updated as capital
- Results: All outputs produced by the business including products, orders, invoices, study reports produced, new solutions for implementation, campaigns, projects, and any other initiative to be completed with subsidiary records are defined, accessed, and updated as one set of results
- Performance Domains: The deployment and implementation of a capital solution to produce a result creates a performance domain to provide rules for cost, effectiveness, expectations, etc and to capture performance data in the utilization of the solution to produce the result
- Enterprises: The business, with parents and subsidiaries, business partners, suppliers, customers, competitors, and other enterprises that interact with the business with subsidiary records are defined, accessed, and updated as one set of enterprises
- Time periods: Time periods are defined for months to the strategic horizon, project durations, result deadlines and goals, reporting periods, etc for relationships from other records
- Business descriptors: All attributes of capital, results, enterprises, and the business are defined and described for consistent use across the business. for relationships from business entities, and to relate information to the business for such attributes, as market, region, customer segment, product group, industry, location, etc
Other entities used for enterprise information are no longer needed or used in business management. All enterprise information is related to the business through reference to one of these six data sets.
All information solutions used in the business relate to an entity under a data set
Information is managed as capital to maintain complete, consistent, and accurate information and to produce information solutions to produce other business and management results. Information capital is supported as business data, human knowledge, facility records, and management intelligence to apply the special capabilities needed to support each. Business data in the six sets is maintained for referencing and updating from other information. All knowledge, record, and intelligence solutions to be utilized to produce results must reference the result or result set to utilize the solution. Solutions are integrated with other information solutions used to produce the result or are accessed with access to result data. Information solutions are updated as solutions in the capital data set and deployed to results in the performance domain data set. Utilization of the solution is recorded for performance and the cost and value added to the result.
All information is managed against the business in one Business Information Base
In a managed business, all information used within the enterprise is logically organized as one consistent set within a Business Information Base. The business information may be on any hardware or Internet site, but is logically referenced to a business data set and entity for control and access. The business information base is maintained as business data for access and security.
All information generated within, entering, or leaving the business must reference a data entity
All information generated within the enterprise or brought into the enterprise must reference a business data entity for control within the Business Information Base. All information sent out from the enterprise must relate to at least one data entity and be recorded in the Business Information Base. This includes all email correspondence, Internet searches and downloads, and file transmissions related in any way to the business.
Business information management supports good corporate governance
Enterprises today suffer many problems and excessive IT overheads from information complexity and the lack of a way to relate information to the business. Enterprises suffer new corporate governance problems from information that is not properly managed. 21st century business management captures actual business data in result value-quality, capital worth and investment returns, performance cost-effectiveness, etc that is not captured today. Complete and accurate financial and non-financial records and documentation are maintained on the actual business. One set of accurate management information is related directly to the actual business. Knowledge, records, and intelligence solutions are provided for business, management, and governance results. All information transfers are controlled against the business for one set of business information. IT utilization is reduced to that needed to manage the Business Information Base. All data, records, images, documents, reports, and other media are managed in the Business Information Base, eliminating the need for separate systems and bases.
